'Even Better Than The Real Thing Vol. 2' - Various Artists
Following the huge success of 'Even Better Than The Real Thing' Vol.1 which raised over €170,000 for the National Children’s Hospital. Vol 2 - is the same principal but with different tracks and is due for release in Ireland on 19th November 2004.
Compiled from live performances as featured on the Ray D’Arcy radio show on Today FM. The artists were given a current chart hit to re-interpret in their own individual style. Presenter Ray D'Arcy comments: “The resulting collection of songs is sometimes stunning, other times sublime but always in my opinion better than the real thing. It is very exciting to have such a stellar group of musicians and songwriters on this CD”. This amazing collection of 13 tracks (plus two bonus tracks), featuring some of the biggest names of Irish music in recent years: Brian Kennedy, Juliet Turner, Paddy Casey, Glen Hansard & Colm MacConIomaire of The Frames and many more, perform their own unique versions of some of the most successful chart hits of recent times. Brian covers the track - 'Dry Your Eyes' performed originally by The Streets. The reaction of Ray’s listeners has been outstanding with some of the cover versions becoming the most requested songs on the station. The album makes these unique tracks available to the public on CD, and for a good cause too … all profits from the sale of the album this year will be donated to the National Children’s Hospital, Tallaght and Barretstown.
Liam Lawton - 'Another World'
Liam Lawton's new collection of music is due to be launched in early November. The CD titled 'Another World', features guest artists as Brian Kennedy, Moya Brennan, The Celtic Tenors, Eimear Quinn, Fionnuala Sherry of Secret Garden, Roisin O Reilly and Sharon Shannon among others. Liam says "It has been a great experience working with such people and I hope that you will enjoy the fruits of our collaboration". Brian sings 'Allelu' in Irish on the opening track of the CD. He then closes the CD with the same track in English.
Liam draws much inspiration from the rich Celtic heritage. Two of his collections have been used for two major television broadcasts shown throughout Europe. He writes both in the native Gaelic language and also in English in the traditional style. In his work Liam has given life to the great and beautiful history of Ireland, using the ancient prayers and traditions as the main source of his texts. 'The Arrival of Fergal Flynn'
For sixteen year old Fergal Flynn, growing up in 1980s Belfast isn't easy. His father and brothers despise him; he’s his mother’s crutch one day, her punching bag the next; he has no idea what he wants to do with his life; and he fancies one of the boys in his class… Fergal just wants to belong – but knows he never will. When handsome young Father Mac arrives in the parish, Fergal embarks on a whirlwind journey towards a new life. As their relationship deepens, he discovers his sexuality, his talent for singing and the wonderful, terrifying opportunities the world has to offer.
Funny, tender and unflinching, The Arrival of Fergal Flynn is the story of a young man struggling to find his voice against all the odds. This novel allows us to see the rich source of talent that has made Brian famous. Having the book published is a personal triumph and one that has required hard work, dedication and a willingness to share a part of one's soul.
Quote from Brian:
"I managed a wee rest in Greece where I also final-proofed my novel which is out in the first week of September. It brings me back to the nervous weeks before my very first album came out in 1990… So, my first book called ‘The Arrival of Fergal Flynn’ is about to arrive. I never worked harder on anything in my life and the Editors at Hodder have been amazing. What a learning curve. I’m hoping to head out on a reading/signing tour as soon as I can so watch the website for details."

'Brian Kennedy - Live In Belfast' on CD & DVD
Brian's brand new album & DVD ‘Live In Belfast’ is out now on the Curb Records label. You can order the CD & DVD now on-line through Caroline Music. No matter where you are based they can despatch it to you.
This superb collection features Brian in concert recorded over two sell-out nights at the Belfast Waterfront Hall, on November 7th and 8th 2003. It pitches his matchless vocal skills across twenty-two tracks, mixing material from all stages of his absorbing decade and a half recording career.
Included are breathtaking renditions of ‘A Better Man’, ‘Get On With Your Short Life’, ‘Put The Message In The Box’, as well as choice selections from his BBC Northern Ireland TV series, ‘On Song’ - from which come ‘The Ballad of Killaloe’, ‘Carrickfergus’, ‘The Curragh of Kildare’ and ‘Danny Boy’. It also features inspired versions of ‘You Raise Me Up’ and a tender medley of Van Morrison songs in ‘Crazy Love’ / ‘Have I Told You Lately’, as well as a heartfelt take on the Neil Young classic, ‘Only Love Can Break Your Heart’.
Kennedy is in fine vocal form throughout, as you’d expect, the performances enhanced by the recording being in his home town of Belfast. Backing him are his long time musical friends, Calum MacColl (guitar, dulcimer and vocals), James Blennerhassett (bass, upright bass and vocals), Liam Bradley (drums, percussion and vocals), and James Hallawell (keyboards and vocals) with the added bonus of The West Ocean String Quartet on ‘I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen’ and ‘The Isle Of Innisfree’.
The warmth and inimitable magic of a Kennedy live show is captured beautifully here and stands as a fine showcase for Brian’s musical eclecticism and emotional range. A vivid snapshot of a vibrant talent at a career peak. The DVD contains special features, behind the scene footage and more.

Brian's Back 'On Song'
As reported last year the BBC commissioned Brian for another series of six shows before transmission of the first series had even begun. Brian was busy over the summer filming around Ireland: From Galway Bay to the Glens of Antrim, he set out on an amazing journey of Irish song.
From ‘The Wild Colonial Boy’ to ‘In The Gloaming’, ‘The Minstrel Boy’ to ‘The Rose of Tralee’, Brian and his guests uncover some of the mysteries surrounding their origins while others share personal memories and thoughts about the songs.
The great news is BBC N Ireland have confirmed the series will again be aired on Friday nights. Tune in from Friday 20th February at 10.35pm. I believe Sky Digital and some cable viewers can also receive BBC N. Ireland. Good to see that it is being broadcast a little further a field.
In the first programme, Brian travels to Portstewart, Wicklow, Cullybackey and the Sally Gap chatting to Jimmy Kennedy Jnr, son of the late, great Jimmy Kennedy. Part of the programme pays tribute to the legendary Omagh-born songwriter, who, during his long and illustrious career, wrote over 2,000 songs including ‘Red Sails In The Sunset’, recorded by everyone from Bing Crosby to Nat King Cole and The Platters.
The series also features performances from Eddi Reader, The Celtic Tenors, Finbar Furey, Eric Bogle, Juliet Turner and Ralph McTell, with further contributions from Phil Coulter, Fergal Keane, Denis Taylor, Louis Walsh, Roy Walker, Gay Byrne, Dolores Keane, Marie Jones, James Galway, Paddy Moloney, Patrick Kielty and BBC Newsline’s Donna Traynor.
Click Here for information relating to the first series. You will also find captures from the TV series in our slide show section.
