AN UP-DATE ON BRIAN'S LAST FEW SHOWS
From all the reviews and help we have received, we have been able to compile set lists and a little insight into what happened on the night. All three shows were solo acoustic sets.

The Junk Fashion Show

The first half of the evening was a spectacular array of designs from anything from bubble wrap to black bin bags, all modeled and choreographed with style. Brian opened with A Better Man, there was no fixed Set List as Brian was taking requests, so Captured leading into Wild Mountain Thyme was the first request of the evening. Neil Young's Only Love Can Break Your Heart & By The Mountain Road were what Brian chose and Crazy Love & Here Comes The Rain Again were the next requests, both with beautiful harmony from some of the evening's models, who also perform in a choir. A request for a new song lead Brian to perform Mother In Me. Put The Message In The Box was the closing song which again had excellent harmonising. Carrickfergus was his encore with some parts off mic. After the hat parade, Brian was on stage again to help with the raffle.

CONTACT YOUTH

The M.C. for the evening was Cool FM's Joe Ferguson. Music from Members of the Ulster Youth Orchestra, Retro, Booley House and The Susan Enan Band, all in the company of The Right Honourable The Lord Mayor. Brian opened with A Better Man, Crazy Love dedicated to Phyllis from Contact Youth, who has been with them for 21 years. Request time again and one we have not heard for a while - Fear Is The Enemy Of Love, which succeeded to get the majority of us up on the dance floor. Put The Message In The Box kept the room rocking and Captured brought his set to a close, not before including Wild Mountain Thyme in the middle and an alternative Captured ending of - Happy Birthday to Contact Youth. Brian was back to lend a hand again, this time to help with the cutting of the cake and the raffle.

WAR CHILD

Special guests were a Scottish Comedian, Mary Coughlan and Jack L. Set List - A Better Man, Town with Here Comes The Rain Again, Captured with Wild Mountain Thyme, a line from Wouldn't It Be Lovely from My Fair Lady, Neil Young's Only Love Can Break Your Heart, a bit off No Other Words, Crazy Love, lines from Kiss by Prince, Outside by George Michael, Marvin Gaye's Sexual Healing, closing with Put The Message In The Box. Encore started with Brian talking about the War Child charity, a duet with Mary Coughlan singing You Send Me, then Carrickfergus with a bit of a difference - as it was performed topless!!!!! This was due to fans requests who wanted to buy his top, so he started an auction and his top was sold to the highest bidder. The whole evening raised £10,000 for War Child

THE MCPEAKE FAMILY

To celebrate 21 years of the Clonard Traditional School of Music a celebratory concert took place on 19th September at The Ulster Hall, Belfast. Performing were Stockton's Way with Special Guests Brian Kennedy, The McPeake Family & The Clonard Musicians.

First on were the Children from the School, a vast array of talented young musicians, playing instruments ranging from the Tin Whistle, Flute, Accordion, Fiddle, Uillean Pipes, Guitar, Bodhran & the Banjo.

The McPeake Family - Francie III on Uillean Pipes, vocals and five string banjo, younger son Eugene on bouzouki, older son Francis IV on pipes, vocals, whistles & Francis' wife Paula make up this exceptional family, who spend their time combining touring, recording, composing with maintaining their school. Wild Mountain Thyme which is the famous composition from a past generation of the McPeake Family was where Brian Kennedy, a former pupil of the school, made his entrance and helped raise the roof for the end of their set.

Brian stayed on stage to continue his solo performance, so with guitar in hand and set list in head, he opened his set with A Better Man. His set list was as follows: A Better Man, Town (with The Eurythmics Here Comes The Rain Again), Neil Young's Only Love Can Break Your Heart, Crazy Love (with Have I Told You Lately done in Brian's words "Tony Bennett style" - meaning off mic), Captured, Put The Message in The Box, Carrickfergus with accompaniment from his friend Marcus on flute. Brian was at home here and left everyone with no doubt that Stockton's Wing would have a hard act to follow. The School, The McPeake Family & Brian on guitar, all joined together with Stockton's Wing at the end of the evening for the grand finale.

HELLO & OK
The main feature in these two glossy magazines (w/e 19th September) is the marriage of Gloria Hunniford to Steven Way. The two magazines cover this glamorous occasion and have a wide variety of wedding photos of the happy couple with family and close friends. Brian can be seen (Hello issue) strumming his guitar at the alter and it is reported that Brian serenaded the newly weds until the wee small hours.

WEDDING BELLS
Open House on Friday 4th September proved to be very poignant indeed. With the forthcoming marriage of Gloria Hunniford to Stephen Way, the programme was all about weddings. There came an announcement that there was to be a surprise during the show for the happy couple that they know nothing about. As Gloria & Steven were seated to await their surprise, Brian made his entrance to the set accompanied by Saxophonist Leo Green. The mixture of surprise and pleasure at Brian's sudden appearance was obvious for everyone to see. Looking very suave in black trousers, black velvet jacket, blue shirt, Brian performed a beautiful rendition of Al Green's Let's Stay Together. Although this is a very well known song, this was a personalised version as Brian sang every word just for Gloria & Steven. This performance was received with appreciative applause from both hosts and audience alike.

BRIAN ATTENDS THE WEDDING
Gloria Hunniford & Steven Way finally tied the knot on Sunday 6th September '98. Brian was asked to sing at the happy event and sang a special version of Have I Told You Lately with string accompaniment.

Brian sang Crazy Love, Put The Message In The Box & The Eurthymics, Here Comes The Rain Again, which he ended with Rain, Rain Go Away, Come Back Another Day. After the President's speech and during Mr Clinton's walkabout, Brian could be heard singing in the background - Sam Cooke's You Send Me.

INTO THE WEST 1998 FEILE AN PHOBAIL

**PRESS RELEASE ** PREIS RAITEAS **
**PHOTO CALL ** GRIAN GHRAF SCAIRT**

Feile An Phobail and Wonderland Promotions in Association with Sponsors Tennents Lager, present INTO THE WEST 1998.

This is a major one-day open air concert to be held at Beechmont Leisure Centre on Sunday 9th August and the finale to The West Belfast Festival which will host a series of events from August 2 - 9. Full details of the Festival will be announced at a later date.

The full line up for this concert is Brian Kennedy, Mary Black and Shane MacGowan & The Popes.

BRIAN KENNEDY needs no introduction as Ireland's favourite performer. He is an exceptional musical talent. He has a voice like no other; warm, expressive, strong, but always gentle. His live concerts are an unforgettable experience. He has just completed a tour of Canada and the West Coast of America, performing with Van Morrison, Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. He has interrupted his recording schedule, this week to be here today, where he is putting the finishing touches to his new album which is set for release in the early Autumn, and he will be performing some of these tracks at the concert with his Band.

MARY BLACK is Ireland's leading female singer. One feature that is central to her success story is her incomparable ability to communicate emotion. Her last album SHINE was released in 1997 and was recorded and produced in America by one of the top record producers, Larry Klein. Mary also achieved great success as part of The Women's Heart phenomenum. She last performed in Belfast to sell-out performances at The Waterfront Hall.

The legendary SHANE MacGOWAN's genius is evident from his many hits with The Pogues. He recently played two sold-out shows at The Limelight. He still sings his beautiful songs about Dublin city, raucous rip-roaring and rumbustious drinking songs, and of course, the coarse furious comic songs -all delivered with the same passion and commitment. Shane MacGowan will be performing with his current band THE POPES.

Feile director Caitriona Ruane says, "This is a unique concert, riding on the historic waves of change happening in Ireland. Embedded in this sea-change over the last decade, Feile is constantly striving for social, economic and cultural regeneration of West Belfast. We are inviting international visitors, and people from all other Ireland to join with us in celebrating this historic musical feast.

INTO THE WEST is the first major open air concert to be staged in West Belfast, and will be seen as a ground breaking exercise, and we intend to build on this foundation for future years. We are confident that people from all over Ireland will give their support to this concert enabling INTO THE WEST to take place for many years to come.

In line with our ticket policy, tickets for this concert reflects our commitment to the community and at £10.00 a ticket equates to superb value for money. We welcome the support of Tennent's Lager, it is a very big employer in our community, and we are delighted to be working with them in this venture. Gaeloiliuint, the Council for Irish medium education, will be the involved charity, and we hope they will benefit both financially and from increased awareness of their work. This event is guaranteed to be one of the musical highlights of open air concerts in the North of Ireland this summer.

Feile An Phobail is a community based festival. Our relationship with the community is paramount to us. We all know that this festival would not survive without the support and work of people within West Belfast, and we are grateful for their co-operation with us in the organisation and running of this event".

Eamonn McCann, Wonderland Promotions, said today "This is a unique departure for us in the normal double ticket price for these artists appearing in concert would be somewhere approaching £50.00. This will undoubtedly result in a huge attendance on 9th August".

Tom McCusker, Sales Director, Bass Ireland, stated "We are pleased to support this major concert under our Tennent's Lager brand and welcome the opportunity to reciprocate the tremendous support we receive in this constructive and entertaining manner. Bass Ireland have an ongoing policy to support communities throughout Northern Ireland, however, it is particularly appropriate that we should support the 'Into the West' concert as our Ulster Brewery has been established on the Glen Road for over 100 years and is one of the area's largest private employers".

BRIAN KENNEDY

Brian Kennedy is an exceptional musical talent. He has a voice like no other, warm, expressive, strong, but always gentle. He also has the rare ability to understand music, to seamlessly weave together inspirations, to draw from many musical styles with genuine affection and understanding. As a teenager Brian sang in his local church, and still retains a love for choral and gospel singing. His professional career started in Belfast's pubs and clubs singing with an unashamed pop band. He has since grown in range and stature to become a major international act, as well as a much in demand accompanist in the world's greatest names in jazz, soul and Irish traditional music. A regular visitor to the music charts, Brian retains a love of playing live, especially to Irish audiences despite the unusual challenges they present.

The last two years have been hectic for Brian. In 1996 he released the eagerly awaited album 'A Better Man' which achieved chart success throughout Ireland and Great Britain.

Brian also formed fruitful partnership with Clannad. He toured with the band throughout the UK and dueted with Maire Brennan on Clannad's hit single 'In a Lifetime' Demonstrating his easy mastery of different musical styles, Brian has also joined Van Morrison and Ray Charles on tour as part of Van's breathtaking Blues & Soul Revue. Also in 1996, he found time to complete projects with Michael O'Suilleabhain and the Irish Chamber Orchestra, and perform at the Celtic Connections Festival in Glasgow, where he was given an award for the fastest selling show of the year, and in front of capacity audiences at Wembley Stadium with Tina Turner. The year ended with yet another high when he was named Singer/Songwriter of the Year in the Irish National Entertainment Awards.

There has been no let up for Brian in 1997. He was voted The Best Irish Male Artist in the Hot Press Awards and in February was honoured with an IRMA award.

During May he undertook a month long tour of Australia and New Zealand and has appeared at many major international festivals including the London and New York Fleadh.

In June he performed at The Gathering to commemorate the Irish Famine, and headlined, The Garden party in Belfast's Botanic Gardens. His busy schedule continued into the Autumn when he once again returned to Belfast to play two sell-out shows in the Waterfront Hall in September. He returned to Belfast again in October this time it was to perform at the Guiness Fashion awards.

Already in 1998 Brian has been on a tour of the United States with the legendary Van Morrison and Bob Dylan and among others on the tour Joni Mitchell. He returned to play two shows for charity in Belfast. In April at this years' Hot Press Awards after picking up an award for the second year in a row he performed a showstopping duet of 'Everybody Hurts' with Boyzones' Ronan Keating, for many the highlight of the show. He is currently in the studio recording his much anticipated new album which will be released later this year.

Then followed a very relaxed and informal chat with Gloria, about his musical career and childhood background. The song was delivered with the usual Kennedy perfection, however, there was one subtle change, and that was............. that Brian was sporting a new short hair cut - yes very short!!!!

WHERE ARE YOU BRIAN????
As Brian is not currently touring in the U.K. with Van Morrison, this is the question that is on everyone's lips at the moment. Well the answer is that Brian has been busy in the studio recording and is currently spending a lot of time between Ireland and the U.K., writing even more new material for his forthcoming and eagerly awaited album.

'MAKING A DIFFERENCE'
Brian was in attendance at an event held to celebrate the lives of people who have been an inspiration to others. The Event was recorded on Thursday 12th February 1998 at The Grand Opera House in Belfast and the show will be transmitted on BBC Northern Ireland, starting on Friday 13th March as part of a four 30 minute television extravaganza. The concert was hosted by Amanda Burton and Patrick Kielty and Brian was seen mingling with guests such as Tom Berenger and Jason Patric. Adding to this array of musical talent, the ever popular Sir Cliff Richard and Olivia Newton John will be joining the programme via a satellite link-up from Australia.

JOHN ROCHA
Going to a Brian Kennedy concert is also like attending a fashion show. At some point on a tour Brian will be wearing a John Rocha creation - have you spotted the Blue trousers? In Belfast for his charity concerts, Brian was wearing new gold satin trousers with a Celtic/Japanese design through them and then two weeks later in Letterkenny, Brian modelled another new pair of brown velvet trousers, both the latest designs from John Rocha. John Rocha not only designs clothes but has designed exclusively for Waterford Crystal. Last month he presented his new menswear range using traditional fabrics such as tweeds. At present he is designing new uniforms for Virgin Atlantic.

'THIS IS THE SEA'
Brian gave his thespian debut in Gabriel Byrne's film This Is The Sea. Starring along with Gabriel are names such as John Lynch & Mary McGuickian. A BETTER MAN
The British Phonographic Industry (B.P.I.) certified The Better Man album with a Silver status in the U.K. during April 1997.
